Obituary for Anthony A. "Tony" Alred

Anthony A. “Tony” Alred, 75, of San Mateo, passed from this life on Friday, December 18, 2020 at UF Health in Gainesville following a brief illness. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN where he was a pitcher on the baseball team. In 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he completed his BS Degree in History / Education from the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga where he also continued playing baseball and defeated several of the top ranked teams around. In 1972, he accepted a position at Palatka South High School teaching American History and coaching. Tony’s 31- year tenure with Palatka South and Palatka High School afforded him the opportunity to influence the lives of thousands of students and athletes as he taught and coached baseball, football, wrestling and girls track. Following his years with the Putnam County School District, he taught and coached another 7 years at Clay High School in Green Cove Springs. He was a member of the College Road Church of Christ in Palatka.
Tony was a passionate UT fan – and of any other team playing against the Gators! A complete sports enthusiast, Tony enjoyed playing golf and loved watching his grandchildren compete in sporting events as well as following former athletes of his as they competed on the next level. Coach Alred will be forever remembered by students and athletes for his enthusiasm and antics at pep rallies spurring on the “Panther Spirit.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lamar and Pearl Alred.
Tony is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dianna Alred of San Mateo, 2 sons, Lance Alred (Brandie) of Palm Coast and Seth Alred (Colie) of Hammock Beach, a brother, Howard Alred (Carolyn) of St. Augustine and 4 grandchildren, Zoe Alred, Addison Alred, Quinn Alred and Nolan Alred.
Services celebrating Tony’s life are anticipated to be in early January and will be announced as arrangements are completed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to Palatka Wrestling Club, 302 Mellon Road, Palatka, FL 32177, Attn: Lucas Bennett.
